The Graveyard Book wins the Hugo Award for Best Novel

Neil Gaiman has just picked up his fourth Hugo Award, the 2009 award for Best Novel for his outstanding young adult fantasy The Graveyard Book. While the novel does get a young adult classification, recognition like this proves once again (as if proof were needed) how well Gaiman's fiction transcends such narrow classifications as age. The Awards Ceremony took place on 9 August at the the 67th Worldcon in Montreal, Québec. A complete list of this year's Hugo Award Winners can be found on the Hugo Awards website.
Although this is Gaiman's fourth Hugo Award, many believe he would probably also have received the 2006 Hugo for Best Novel for Anansi Boys if he hadn't withdrawn it from consideration. His other Hugo Award winning works include my personal favourite, American Gods (Best Novel 2002), said to be one of the most highly honored works of fiction in recent times, Coraline (Best Novella 2003), and A Study in Emerald (Best Short Story 2004).

I have a confession to make. I'm not proud of it, but there's no use trying to hide it any longer, the damage has already been done. I was an Apple fanatic. Hard core. Completely obsessed. Almost any time we write anything about Neil Gaiman, you can be sure that someone will feel the need to post a comment “outing” the man as a Scientologist. Finally having had the opportunity to watch Nicholas Winding Refn’s Valhalla Rising, I now appreciate why it was received so well at film festivals and yet failed to get a wide theatrical release. It’s hard going. No movie release in 2011 was more misunderstood and unfairly maligned as a result of misunderstanding than Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch. Odds are you’ll disagree with that statement. After watching the pilot to Fox’s ambitious TV time travelling dinosaur fest called Terra Nova, I am praying that when I watch the next episode the entire cast gets eaten by dinosaurs (in fact, that hope is the only reason I’ll be able to sit through another one). The entire cast’s gruesome deaths at the hands of a frenzied T-Rex or a velociraptor having a bad day can’t come soon enough.... Read more
