Beatles Yellow Submarine remake

yellowA remake of the 1968 psychedelic animated Beatles movie, the Yellow Submarine, is back on track according to director Robert Zemeckis. Zemeckis told Moviefone at the Back to the Future 25th Anniversary that the film was happening, but wouldn't give any further details.

This contradicts earlier talk from David Tennant, the actor who played Doctor Who before Matt Smith, who said in an interview on The Paul O'Grady Show that the movie was dead in the water.

"I don't think it's happening anymore," he said, in response to questions about auditioning for the role of Queen of the Blue Meanies. "I think the film has gone away."

It looks like Tennant's comments were premature.

The original press release from Walt Disney announced a 3D performance capture version starring Cary Elwes (as George Harrison), Peter Serafinowicz (Paul McCartney), Dean Lennox Kelly (John Lennon) and Adam Campbell (Ringo Starr), with a scheduled release date of 2012. Sixteen Beatles songs and recordings from the original motion picture will be used, including All Together Now, All You Need Is Love, Eleanor Rigby, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds and With A Little Help From My Friends.

In the original Yellow Submarine film, the fab four are whisked away in a yellow submarine to save Pepperland from the dreaded Blue Meanies. There are plenty of surreal creatures, vivid landscapes, and crazy dialogue that suited the animations perfectly.

Can Robert Zemeckis capture the spirit of the original and transform it for a modern audience? I'm sceptical, but the recent Beatles inspired musical, Across the Universe, was great  - and I was sceptical about that too - so there's always a chance. We'll keep you posted if we hear anything more.
