First trailer for X-Men: First Class is brilliant

first_class_mac20th Century Fox's relaunch of the X-Men franchise with X-Men: First Class sounded a bit dubious to me when I first heard about it, but the first trailer puts any doubts I had to rest. The trailer looks extremely well produced, with a style and gravity missing from the last pure X-Men film, X-Men: The Last Stand (not that you should judge a film by its special effects, but there are some great effects in the trailer too!).

According to 20th Century Fox's media release, X-Men: First Class focuses on Professor X and Magneto's early years (characters originally played by Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen). Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensher took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time.

"Before they were arch enemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-Men."

X-Men: First Class is directed by Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass, Star Dust, Layer Cake) and stars the excellent Scottish actor James McAvoy (Wanted, The Last King of Scotland). So many science fiction and fantasy trailers have come out this week it's difficult to keep up, but this one is a cut above the rest. The film was written by Bryan Singer and Josh Schwartz and also stars Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence.

If the trailer is anything to go by (and of course they frequently aren't) X-Men: First Class could be the best X-Men film yet. There have been four X-Men films before this one, including X-Men, X2, X-Men: The Last Stand, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

X-Men: First Class will be released in theatres 3 June, 2011. Watch the first trailer on YouTube below.
