The Amazing Spider Man with Rhys Ifans as a lizard

The-Amazing-Spider-Man-movie-imageYou may not have heard that a new Spider-Man film is heading our way (relaunched, revamped, regenerated, resurrected and regurgitated). Prepare to be amazed! Columbia Pictures has announced that the title of the new film will be The Amazing Spider-Man. Rather than continuing with director Sam Raimi and stars Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker and Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson, Marc Webb directs with Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and Emma Stone as the female lead Gwen Stacy.

Webb, most famous for the teen romantic comedy (500) Days of Summer, is directing a screenplay by James Vanderbilt, Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves. Peter Parker (Spider-Man) is in high school, an average teenager dealing with both contemporary human problems - such as how to find a girlfriend and reaching high scores on computer games - and the expected super-human supernatural difficulties. The super-human difficulties in this chapter arrive with The Lizard, played by charismatic Welsh actor Rhys Ifans.

According to the original Spider-Man Marvel comics, The Lizard was a gifted surgeon who went to war to help his country by performing surgery on wounded GIs. When his arm is injured in a blast and has to be amputated, he becomes obsessed with uncovering the secrets of reptilian regeneration. After successfully regrowing the limb of a rabbit with a serum based on reptilian DNA, he tests the serum on himself and while his arm does grow back, he is also transformed into a reptilian monster (this has happened to me a couple of times).

Not much there yet, but you can find the film's official website here.

The Amazing Spider Man is being shot entirely in 3D, will arrive in theatres 3 July 2012, and is based on a true story. One of the statements in the last sentence may be incorrect.
