Second official trailer for Marvel’s Thor: The Battle Comes to Earth

ThorMy enthusiasm for Marvel’s Thor took a bit of a battering after the first full length trailer was leaked online (following its premiere at Comic-Con) back in August last year. Like most, I was surprised by the choice of noted Shakespearean actor and director Kenneth Branagh to helm this project, but I’ve always believed that he has what it takes to bring this epic tale of gods and men and ancient conflicts to the big screen. My only concern was that Branagh might be tempted to camp it up a bit too much (given the comic book approach to the material, some degree of camp is probably unavoidable). The first trailer with its glitzy vision of Asgard, city of the gods, did nothing to diminish that concern, but I’m pleased to say that this second trailer has gone a long way to restoring my faith in Branagh as the ideal (if controversial) choice to helm this project.

Thor stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Sir Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Natalie Portman as astrophysicist (and love interest) Jane Foster, and Tom Hiddleston as Loki. The script was written by Ashley Miller, Zack Stentz and Don Payne from a story by J. Michael Straczynski and Mark Protosevich. Through his arrogance and stupidity, Thor, son of Odin, reignites an ancient war in the realm of the gods, bringing death and destruction where there has been peace. For this he is banished from Asgard to dwell on Earth amongst mortals where he comes to learn humility and responsibility and to realise his true potential as a defender of the weak and a god amongst men:

If you know your Norse Mythology, you might be surprised to see that the One-eyed God Odin appears to be in possession of both eyes (check it out at 2:08). Either this is an oversight by the filmmakers or the scene occurs at a time before Odin gave his eye for a drink of the water of Mimir’s Well from which he gained great wisdom. We'll have to see...
