New Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 featurette

Harry Potter and the Deathly HallowsA new behind the scenes featurette for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 has been released by Warner Bros. and the signs are that director David Yates and screenwriter Steve Kloves have indeed produced the suitably dark, dramatic and exciting conclusion to the series many of us were hoping for. The featurette includes new footage (with a first look at the Gringott’s dragon), interviews with Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and Yates himself, who promises an epic finale with plenty of action.

Deathly Hallows takes up the adventure of Harry Potter in the wake of Dumbledore’s death and the revelation that Lord Voldemort has shattered his soul into seven pieces, concealing them in virtually indestructible objects. While any of these so-called horcruxes remain intact, the Dark Lord cannot be destroyed. Harry has been left with the seemingly impossible task of locating and destroying the horcruxes before the inevitable final confrontation with Lord Voldemort.

For many adults, like myself, who have happily shared the journey with the young adult audience J.K. Rowling had in mind when she wrote Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, this is the movie we have been waiting for: the suitably dramatic conclusion to an ever more grim fantasy.

Part 2 will be released in 3D on 15 July 2011. It was originally intended that Part 1 would also be released in 3D, but to the surprise of many (after all the talk of a 3D release) it was revealed that Deathly Hallows was not in fact shot in 3D but was to be converted to 3D. After the studio’s disastrous experience with the conversion of Clash of the Titans, some lessons, it seems, were learned. Let’s hope the 3D conversion of Part 2 is worth the expense.
