With a plot that bears some striking similarities to M. Night Shyamalan's After Earth,Oblivion stars Tom Cruise as one of the last drone repairmen stationed on a future Earth that has been devastated after a war with an alien race. The two weeks mentioned in the trailers refers to the time Tom Cruise's character has left to serve as a patrolman before he can rejoin the rest of the human race - an unspecified location beyond Earth.
In After Earth, Will Smith's character and his son are also on a future Earth, abandoned years before after unspecified cataclysmic events, hoping to return to humanity's new home, Nova Prime. Of the two, I think Oblivion has the edge if these two new trailers are anything to go on.
Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with the "Scavs", Cruise patrols Earth's skies until he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft and his world is turned upside down. Is everything he believed an elaborate lie?
Even if you're not a Tom Cruise fan, the lush visuals and action sequences in these two trailers may make you think again about going along for the ride. It's nearly here too. Oblivion is scheduled to be released April, 2013.
Other plusses are the involvement of Joseph Kosinski in the director's chair and Morgan Freeman as a co-star. Kosinski directed the impressive Tron: Legacy.
