Gary Oldman signs on to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

gary-the-oldActing heavyweight Gary Oldman has joined the cast of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, a sequel to the outstanding Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Oldman will play the leader of a human colony. He joins Jason Clarke, Kodi Smit-McPhee and of course Andy Serkis, in his special effects suit as the head chimpanzee, Ceasar.

Set 15 years after the events of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes starts after most of humanity has been wiped out and intelligent apes now rule the world. According to Coming Soon, the film will follow two main storylines, a group of San Francisco-based scientists that are forming a resistance against the apes, and Serkis' Caesar as he tries to maintain order and power within his new civilization.

The screenplay is by Scott Z. Burns, Amanda Silver, Rick Jaffa and Mark Bomback. The sequel will be directed by Matt Reeves, who replaces UK director Rupert Wyatt from the original.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will be released 23 May, 2014 release.

Gary Oldman will also appear in Jose Padilha's RoboCop early next year. In Robocop, Oldman plays the lead scientist Norton, grappling with the ethical implications of his hybrid robotic human creation.
