We told you recently about the possibility of a remake of Ridley's Scott's classic science fiction horror, Alien, by 20th Century Fox. Well it appears a new Alien movie is definitely on the way, but it's a prequel to the original, not a remake (thank God!). Not sure if it should be classified as a reboot, relaunch, revival, or just another Alien movie, but it's happening either way.

Scifiwire reports that producer Tony Scott (brother of Ridley Scott who directed the original) confirmed that an Alien prequel will be going ahead with Carl Rinsch directing. He was speaking at a promotional event for The Taking of Pelham 123.

"Carl Rinsch is going to do the prequel to Alien," he said. "He's one of our directors at our company."

Scott said he hoped to start filming the Alien prequel by the end of the year for a possible 2011 release.

I like this idea. Trying to remake Ridley Scott’s sci-fi classic Alien would have been mad. They would have been constrained by a plot known to many and adversely compared to the original if they couldn’t come up with a better twist to the same story. With a prequel the new director Carl Rinsch should have a lot more creative room to move.
