District 9 sequel on the cards reveals Blomkamp

If you haven't already watched Neill Blomkamp's wonderfully engrossing and exceptionally well written SF film/documentary, District 9, about the arrival of refugee alien "Prawns" in a broken spacecraft hovering above Johannesburg, South Africa, then do so immediately! At least before Neill Blomkamp starts filming a sequel, which he seems to be itching to do. The ending clearly leaves open the possibility of a sequel (or two) and South African writer-director Blomkamp would love to take it on.
While District 10 is definitely on the cards, he has another science fiction film lined up first: “I have another science fiction film now that I want to write for the rest of the year,” Blomkamp said. “That, I think, may be the next one, and I’m incredibly into [it]. It’s quite different, and it’s a unique idea, but I’m very into it. It’s a very similar genre.”

He was asked whether he was planning on having Christopher do as he promised and return to Earth in three years to help Wikus (the lead character who has undergone a life changing transformation at the end of the District 9 into a Prawn himself).
“I do have ideas rattling around in my head, and weirdly enough they’re not to do with what you just said,” said Blomkamp. “They’re different. But, who knows?”

Finally having had the opportunity to watch Nicholas Winding Refn’s Valhalla Rising, I now appreciate why it was received so well at film festivals and yet failed to get a wide theatrical release.
