While the science fiction epic The Chronicles of Riddick (2004) did not perform as well as expected in the box office (even though it was superior to the original), star Vin Diesel and writer/ director David Twohy are back for a third Riddick chapter. Riddick 3 follows Pitch Black (2000) and the Chronicles of Riddick (2004). Left for dead on a desert planet, Riddick fights for survival against alien predators far more vicious than any human.
With little chance of survival unless he can escape off world, he uses a beacon to alert bounty hunters to his presence. If he can deal with the bounty hunters and use their ship to flee, perhaps he can get out of this one alive? To complicate matters, the captain of the bounty hunters ship is a face from Riddick's past, with a personal grudge to settle.
The trailer is ok, not amazing, but what worries me is that the plot seems very, very similar to the first Pitch Black Riddick film. Also, how are they going to tie it all in with chapter two? The Chronicles of Riddick ended with Riddick becoming the new Lord Marshall, leader of the Furyans, and by default the ultimate ruler of the galaxy (or something like that anyway).
Really though, what I'm trying to say is, why can't they build on the narrative they've established in the previous two films and come up with something a little more original, with a little more plot and a little more character? I don't want to have to keep writing trailer reviews where it appears as if I'm writing about the same film over and over again. Is this so much to ask? What is it with Hollywood? Jesus.
Anyway, Van Diesel is Riddick, Karl Urban reprises his role as Vaako, and the film also features Dave Bautista and Katee Sackhoff (you may remember her as Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica).
Riddick 3 is scheduled to muscle its way into cinema complexes everywhere 6 September 2013.
You can watch the trailer or ignore it completely and just wait for the film to come out. It's up to you. I don't want to twist your arm either way. I'm not that kind of guy.
