Godzilla returns

The iconic Godzilla, the Japanese reptilian monster that frequently wreaks havoc whenever it appears, is coming back to Hollywood. According to Variety, Legendary Pictures is co-producing and co-financing a new Godzilla movie with Warner Bros. They are aiming for a 2012 release date. The last time Godzilla was given the full Hollywood treatment was with director Roland Emmerich and star Matthew Broderick back in 1998. I don't remember much about it, but what I do remember was less than average.
Legendary obtained rights to the character from Japan's Toho Co., which has overseen the development of an amazing 25 separate Godzilla films. Godzilla was first born in Ishiro Honda's science fiction classic Gojira in 1954. It seems the public and movie studios can't get enough of the creature. Let's hope this one will be a step up from Emmerich's attempt.
Thomas Tull, Chairman and CEO of Legendary, wants to create a film that the fans will appreciate and is true to the Godzilla legend.
"Godzilla is one of the world's most powerful pop culture icons, and we at Legendary are thrilled to be able to create a modern epic based on this long-loved Toho franchise," he said. "Our plans are to produce the Godzilla that we, as fans, would want to see. We intend to do justice to those essential elements that have allowed this character to remain as pop-culturally relevant for as long as it has."
