Matt Damon in Philip K. Dick's The Adjustment Bureau

adjustmentI'm usually quick to spot news regarding Philip K. Dick based movies as I'm an enthusiastic fan (he's arguably one of the twentieth century's greatest SF authors), but this one until now had slipped under my radar completely. According to ScriptShadow, a new Philip K. Dick inspired film titled The Adjustment Bureau is well into production and will be released 30 July 2010. Starring Matt Damon, Emily Blunt and Terence Stamp, and loosely based on the Philip K. Dick short story, Adjustment Team, it looks like one part science fiction and one part romance.

David Norris is an honest, inspirational Congressman running for the Senate, who unexpectedly is defeated badly. As David prepares his consolation speech, he meets a beautiful woman named Elise (Emily Blunt) who turns his world around. There's an instant bond and attraction and he can't get her out of his head. Inspired by Elise, his consolation speech is a television masterstroke, repeated again and again, and leading many people to believe he has what it takes to be the next president of the United States.

After the speech, as he tries to track down the woman of his dreams, it appears that mysterious forces are at work trying to keep them apart. David learns he is up against the agents of fate itself - the men of The Adjustment Bureau – who will do everything in their considerable power to prevent David and Elise from being together. He must either let her go and accept a predetermined path or risk everything by peeling back the layers of reality...

Sounds like an intriguing premise!

Shot in and around Manhattan, The Adjustment Bureau is a Universal Studios film and is adapted and directed by George Nolfi. Nolfi wrote Timeline, Ocean's 12, and The Sentinel.

A trailer can't be far off.
