Logan's Run remake: getting old is not an option

Logan's RunA remake of the 1976 MGM film Logan's Run, which starred Michael York, is moving forward according to Variety. Adapted from the novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson first published in 1967, Logan's Run tells the story of a dystopian society where population growth and resource use is kept in equilibrium by a fixed age limit. Being old is not an option. When people reach their 21st birthday (30 in the film), most are executed willingly.

Carl Rinsch is in talks to direct the film for Warner Bros. and producers Joel Silver and Akiva Goldsman. Rinsch will make his film directing debut in Universal's 47 Ronin, a samurai tale starring Keanu Reeves, next year.

In Logan's Run a colour coded flower crystal embedded in the palm of your right-hand displays your age. Those who resist their "Lastday" ceremony (called Runners) are hunted down by law enforcement officers known as Sandmen, who keep the ageist system operating.

The remake has been a slow ten years plus in development, but now finally looks as if it will actually appear.

When I first saw Logan's Run as a kid I thought it was the greatest science fiction film ever, but the film (or my memories of it) aged badly. I watched it about ten years back and was very unimpressed. It is certainly in need of a 21st century makeover. The premise is a good one and offers some excellent scope for social commentary.

In the 1976 film, Michael York played a Sandman trying to escape his mandatory death sentence after learning from other Runners of a fabled place called Sanctuary where you could live in peace beyond your age limit without fear of persecution. Everyone lives inside a domed city cut off from an outside apparently devastated by nuclear conflict. In a short lived TV series that followed the film, a Sandman travelled across this post-apocalyptic world searching for Sanctuary.

Too early for casting news yet, but this could be one to keep an eye on.
