Writer Alex Garland joins 3D Logan's Run remake

We reported recently that the 1976 science fiction classic Logan's Run, starring Michael York, is being remade. Now it's been confirmed by FirstShowing that British writer Alex Garland, the man behind 28 Days Later and Sunshine, is onboard and the remake will be filmed in the wildly popular 3D format (whether anyone likes it or not).
Logan's Run producer Joel Silver, who has produced Lethal Weapon, The Matrix and V for Vendetta, just to name a few, told MTV News that he would "like to make Logan's Run [in 3D]. It's a movie I've always been intrigued with, excited by. We're writing a script now, and that should be a big 3D movie, and it should be devised and shot in 3D."
At least they're filming in 3D to start with, not adding it later as they did with the recent Clash of the Titans remake. A last minute conversion, as Clash of the Titans demonstrated, can lead to some very dodgy looking 3D effects.
Having writer Alex Garland onboard is a definite plus. Garland's film Sunshine, directed by Danny Boyle, was one of the stand out science fiction films of the last decade (you can read our review of Sunshine here). Considering Garland also wrote the screenplays for Leonardo DiCaprio's The Beach (based on Garland's own novel) and the science fiction horror 28 Days Later (a massive adrenaline rush of a movie) this should give first time director Carl Rinsch some great material to work with - a great premise meets a great writer.
I know some people have expressed dismay that Logan's Run is being remade at all, believing that it's a classic in its own right and shouldn't be touched, but at least those who think so will know that the script is in skilled hands. And let's face it, if they get the script right, half the film making battle is over.
The Logan's Run film (and the book it's based on) tells the story of a dystopian society where population growth and resource use is kept in equilibrium by a fixed age limit. Being old is not an option. When people reach their 21st birthday (30 in the film), most are executed willingly. You can read more about Logan's Run plot in our original article on the remake here.
