Yet more versions of Avatar: Extended Collector’s Edition due 16 November

As if they hadn't extracted enough money from hard core fans, James Cameron's Avatar is being re-released yet again. It's less than a year old, but the versions just keep on coming. We had a version with 8 minutes of extra footage released theatrically in August, and now we have a few more versions just in time for Christmas.
According to the official press release, an Extended Collector's Edition of Avatar on Blu-ray and DVD will be released 16 November. The three-disc ultimate set will feature the original theatrical release, a special edition re-release, and new collector's extended cut with sixteen more minutes - including an exclusive alternate opening Earth scene.
"I told our team — let's do the ultimate box set of Avatar, with everything in it the fans could possibly want," said Cameron. "There's an extended length cut that's sixteen minutes longer, plus documentaries, behind the scenes featurettes, artwork and over 45 minutes of deleted scenes. Everything worth putting into a special edition is in this set," he said.It took Ridley Scott over 30 years to release three official versions of his science fiction classic Blade Runner, it's taken James Cameron less than a year with Avatar. Perhaps it's a sign of the times? Unless you're a hardcore fan, please resist the urge to buy the film yet again. Let's face it, give it another six months and they'll be releasing a totally new version of Avatar with another (insert length here) of extra footage.

After watching the pilot to Fox’s ambitious TV time travelling dinosaur fest called Terra Nova, I am praying that when I watch the next episode the entire cast gets eaten by dinosaurs (in fact, that hope is the only reason I’ll be able to sit through another one). The entire cast’s gruesome deaths at the hands of a frenzied T-Rex or a velociraptor having a bad day can’t come soon enough.... Read more

Finally having had the opportunity to watch Nicholas Winding Refn’s Valhalla Rising, I now appreciate why it was received so well at film festivals and yet failed to get a wide theatrical release. It’s hard going. On one hand it’s almost unbearably brutal and on the other it is layered with the sort of mind-bending symbolic meaning that leads the viewer to the brink of utter confusion and leaves... Read more

Almost any time we write anything about Neil Gaiman, you can be sure that someone will feel the need to post a comment “outing” the man as a Scientologist.
