Apollo 18: The reason we never went back to the moon?

apollo18Apollo 18 was one of three planned Apollo moon missions cancelled during the 1960s and 1970s due to budget cuts and schedule constraints (Apollo 17 was NASA's last manned mission to the moon in 1972). But what if Apollo 18 did go ahead, but the public was kept in the dark? Even better, what if the Apollo 18 mission landed and something happened that made us never want to return? That's the premise of the upcoming science fiction thriller Apollo 18 produced by Wanted director Timur Bekmambetov. It's an intriguing urban legend soon to come to life on the big screen courtesy of The Weinstein Company. Conspiracy theorists have kept this tale alive since we left the moon and NASA cut back on its space budget and ambitions.

According to First Showing and Deadline, Apollo 18 will be shot found-footage style, depicting "lost" recordings from Apollo 18's mysterious mission to the lunar surface, where "something very, very bad happened to the crew." The covert mission to the moon will reveal new evidence of extraterrestrial life.

The film will be directed by Lopez-Gallego from a script by Brian Miller.

Love the idea, but there's little to go on at the moment. We'll keep you up-to-date with any news as it comes to hand.

Apollo 18 is scheduled to be released March 4, 2011.
