Independence Day 2 and 3 falter while Men in Black 3 gets rewrites

willsmithMIB3Things are not looking good for the two Independence Day sequels we reported on in March last year. At the same time that director Roland Emmerich gave Empire Magazine more positive news about the upcoming Isaac Asimov Foundation films, he revealed that "Independence Day 2 is nowhere".

"It's back and forth, back and forth," he said. "There's no script because I don't want to write anything before anything starts."

Emmerich did say of Independence Day 2 that "one day it will happen". Everything though points to Independence Day 2 and 3 being dead in the water - at least for now.

In the mean time, the star of the first Independence Day film, Will Smith, has gone on to star in another sequel, Men in Black 3. While Men in Black 3 did start shooting last year, production has stopped while the screenplay is being rewritten. Both Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are onboard. According to MovieWeb, a new shooting start date has been set for March 28.

Men in Black 3 takes place in both the present day and in 1969, with Will Smith's Agent J travelling back in time to meet a young Agent K (Josh Brolin). Tommy Lee Jones reprises his role as the present-day Agent K.

Men in Black 3 is expected to hit theatres 25 May 2012 and also stars Sacha Baron Cohen (of Borat fame), Jemaine Clement, Emma Thompson, Gemma Arterton and Alec Baldwin. Barry Sonnenfeld is directing.
