There were rumours of an HTC phone with a 5-inch 1080p display, a world beating resolution of 1920×1080 pixels, but doubts were expressed (especially by me) and nothing seemed to come of it. Fortunately in this case the speculation turned out to be more than just speculation, with the new device surfacing today in Japan. It looks like a stunning phone, which not only manages to remain thin even with its high pixel count (9.1mm), but also comes equipped with a micro-SD card reader for extra storage, 2GB of RAM and 4G LTE connectivity. The display is easily its stand out feature. It's a standard setting 440ppi (pixels per inch). By comparison, the 4-inch iPhone 5 features a 1136×640 resolution display (326ppi) and the 4.8 inch Samsung Galaxy S III packs a 1280×720 resolution display (306ppi).
This Super LCD 3 display is HTC's sequel to its Super LCD 2 display featured in their previous flagship phone, the HTC One X. The HTC J Butterfly runs Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean), the latest version of Google's Android OS. Other specs include a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 processor, an 8-megapixel camera with an f/2.0 lens, and a 2,020mAh non-removable battery.
Here's hoping that a version of the HTC J Butterfly will be one of the Nexus devices Google is rumoured to be releasing at the end of this year. Apparently Google has been working on up to five Nexus phones (and tablets?) from different manufacturers, including LG, Samsung, HTC, ASUS and Sony. Nexus devices are "pure" Android, without the annoying software overlays that manufacturers seem to be so keen on adding (Samsung's Touchwiz, HTC's Sense, etc.).
The Verge reports that the HTC J Butterfly will not make its way out of Japan, but an HTC representative confirmed that the display would makes its way globally soon in another device.
The mobile phone world is getting more and more complicated daily. I was set on buying the new Windows 8 Nokia Lumia 920 phone, but the HTC J Butterfly's display, features and size, are just right. There's also a rumoured Microsoft branded Surface phone to look out for too.
