Dirk Gently returns in 2012 with four hour long episodes

dirkgently2If you liked the BBC’s pilot episode for Dirk Gently, the TV show based on Douglas Adams' comic fantasy novels, you’ll be glad to hear that more episodes are on the way. Adams of course is most famous for his Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series, but also wrote two and a half Dirk Gently books before his unfortunate early death. Dirk Gently books include Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul, and the incomplete The Salmon of Doubt.

Stephen Mangan starred as Dirk Gently, with Darren Boyd his sidekick Richard Macduff, and Helen Baxendale as Richard's girlfriend Susan. Mangan made a flamboyant Dirk, and while the pilot was not as funny or captivating as the novels, it was an intriguing and entertaining story nonetheless, with a good blend of comedy, science fiction and fantasy. Anti-hero Dirk Gently (basing his work on the fundamental interconnectedness of all things), with his university friend Richard in tow, solves the disappearance of a cat from an old lady's house, via the death of a billionaire in a warehouse, and a great many other seemingly disparate events. The improbable time travel conclusion was a nice Adams style twist.  Mangan's Dirk is an extreme blend of Sherlock Holmes, Doctor Who and Doctor Smith from Lost in Space, with less morals and more eccentric behaviour.

The series was green-lit after the one-hour pilot attracted 1.1 million viewers on BBC Four (a 3.9% share) , over three times the channel's average.

The only complaint I had with the pilot was that Mangan as Dirk seemed far more unlovable and irresponsible than he appeared in the books. It was much harder to feel sympathy for him on film. In fact, at times he acted like a complete git without any thought for the repercussions. Anyway, it was only a pilot, so the show could alter dramatically before filming gets underway. Even with this criticism, it was still an entertaining trip.

The TV pilot was written by Howard Overman, creator of Misfits and Vexed Overman will write the new episodes too.

"I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to write more episodes of Dirk,” said Overman ”and look forward to seeing where his unique detective methodology and perspective on life takes me."

Get ready for more Dirk Gently in 2012. I look forward it!
