If you’re a fan like I am, you’ll be happy to hear that the paranormal alternate reality science fiction TV series Fringe, created by J. J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, has been granted a fifth and final season by Fox (there was a possibility that Fringe would end with the current season).
A "Fringe Division" based in Boston, Massachusetts uses unorthodox "fringe" science and FBI investigative techniques to investigate unexplained (often incredibly gory) incidents related to mysteries surrounding a parallel universe, a group called “The Observers” who appear to control time, and the past research of the eccentric genius Doctor Walter Bishop (played by John Noble) who had been institutionalised after a lab accident. Years before, Doctor Bishop stole an exact copy of his dying son from a parallel universe, which sets off a chain of future events that the Fringe team must use all their skills to set right.
A final season should give the writers, the cast and the crew plenty of time to craft a fitting ending to this excellent show, perhaps allowing them to tie together some of the complicated plot strands. Personally I’m hoping the fifth season will rate so well that they’ll continue with a sixth.
"Fringe is a remarkably creative series that has set the bar as one of television's most imaginative dramas. Bringing it back for a final 13 allows us to provide the climactic conclusion that its passionate and loyal fans deserve," said Fox entertainment chief Kevin Reilly. "The amazing work the producers, writers and the incredibly talented cast and crew have delivered the last four seasons has literally been out of this world. Although the end is bittersweet, it's going to be a very exciting final chapter."
"We are thrilled and beyond grateful that Fox - and our fans - have made the impossible possible: Fringe will continue into a fifth season that will allow the series to conclude in a wild and thrilling way," said Abrams.
