David Tennant officially quits Doctor Who

David Tennant quits Doctor WhoThere has been speculation that David Tennant would be leaving Doctor Who for some time, but now it's official.

"I've had the most brilliant, bewildering and life-changing time working on Doctor Who," David Tennant told the Guardian newspaper about his decision to quit the series after five years. "I have loved every day of it. It would be very easy to cling on to the Tardis console forever and I fear that if I don't take a deep breath and make the decision to move on now, then I simply never will."

Rumoured replacements have included James Nesbitt, Simon Pegg, and Robert Carlyle. Simon Pegg has been quoted as saying that he was reasonably certain he would "stuff it up" if he took on the role, while James Nesbitt has stated that he knew nothing about it and "I wouldn't put a lot of money on it."

Doctor Who will return with three specials starring David Tennant in 2009. The full length fifth series (David Tennant's last) will be transmitted in 2010.

Let's hope they choose the next Doctor wisely so we can continue to enjoy its well deserved revival. If you have any suggestions about who you think should take on the role, add a comment below.

UPDATE!
